China is expected to form a complete civil code by 2020, said Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the Standing Committee of the 12th National People's Congress (NPC) in Beijing on Wednesday.
Zhang made the remarks when he was delivering a work report of the NPC Standing Committee during the fifth session at the Great Hall of the People.
The NPC, China's top legislature, worked on developing civil laws four times, in 1954, 1962, 1979, and 2001, after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The country formulated the General Principles of Civil Law, and introduced a series of civil laws, such as the Inheritance Law, the Adoption Law, the Contract Law, the Property Law and so on.
The General Provision of Civil Law will be developed first, and the entire compiling work will be completed by 2020, according to Zhang.
The NPC Standing Committee has decided to submit the draft of the General Provision of Civil Law to the ongoing session for deliberation.
Zhang believed that the piece of legislation would "stand the test of the time and meet the expectations of the people."
