US President Donald Trump's Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt arrived in Israel on Monday in a bid to ease tensions over East Jerusalem's most contested holy site.

As tensions go on, neighboring countries are urging Israel to resolve the problem. An Israeli security guard opened fire outside the Israeli embassy in Jordan's capital Amman after being stabbed on Sunday, killing two Jordanians. Meanwhile, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation will meet in Istanbul next week for talks on the crisis.

Speaking to reporters on Monday after returning from a trip to Gulf nations, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Israel is harming not only itself but the whole region, adding that Turkey would not allow Islam's sacred values to be trampled on.

An Israeli government official said Greenblatt met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday evening. A senior official in the Trump administration said Greenblatt's visit is to support efforts to reduce tensions in the region.

The trip marks the first sign of high-level involvement by the White House to end the strife between Israel and the Muslim world over the violence that broke out in the al-Aqsa Mosque compound
