Chinese Minister of Environmental Protection Chen Jining was appointed vice mayor and acting mayor of Beijing on Saturday.

The appointment was announced at the 39th session of the Standing Committee of the 14th Beijing Municipal People's Congress, which is the local legislature.

Earlier in the day, the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee said it has appointed Cai Qi as the Party chief of Beijing, replacing Guo Jinlong.
