A suspect package with “dangerous objects,” which triggered a bomb alert in Hong Kong Disneyland on Monday, turned out to be a toy parcel containing a broken Buzz Lightyear, a spokesperson for the resort confirmed on Monday afternoon.
It was sent from a consumer who wanted to complain about the quality of the toy.
‍Around 500 employees working in the administrative offices of Hong Kong Disneyland were evacuated on Monday noon after the package was delivered to the main office building.
The parcel was believed to have contained explosives, according to local media, and was addressed to Samuel Lau, the managing director of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.
Hong Kong Disneyland received the package at around mid-day and police was immediately called.
Television broadcaster TVB initially said that wires and a battery were inside the parcel.
Visitors were not moved out as no threat was posed to the theme park or attractions, Hong Kong Disneyland has confirmed.
The parcel sparked fright and alarm in Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, whose residents were yet to recover from a scare that took place only a few days earlier.
On Friday, a man reportedly using a “Molotov cocktail” set fire inside an underground train crossing the Victoria Harbor for Tsim Sha Tsui station, forcing the train to stop at the station and all passengers to be evacuated.
Nineteen people were injured in the subway incident, and the man, believed to have a history of mental illness, was detained over arson charges.
