Somali pirates have hijacked an Indian cargo ship, Reuters reported on Monday citing a former anti-piracy official.
The hijacking took place on Saturday when the cargo ship, named “Al Kaushar”, with 11 crew members on board was on its way to Al Mukala port in Yemen from Dubai. It was hijacked by armed Somali pirates off the coast of Somalia, according to Indian local media.
The owners of the ship have reportedly tried to get in touch with the hijackers to discuss how the ship can be repatriated.
The captain of the ship has informed the authorities in Dubai about the incident.
Somali pirates successfully seized control of an oil tanker off the Somalian coast on March 13, after a period in which there were few incidents.
In their heyday in 2011, 237 attacks were launched and hundreds of hostages were held by Somali pirates, data from the International Maritime Bureau showed.
