Chinese President Xi Jinping has vowed to deepen agricultural reforms, strengthen poverty alleviation measures, and extend a helping hand to students, during a meeting with delegations from the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party, China Association for Promoting Democracy, and China's Jiu San Society, on the sidelines of the 5th Session of 12th Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference National Committee (CPPCC) in Beijing on Saturday.
"He asked us to supervise poverty alleviation work. There used to be fake poverty alleviation programs which didn't help people that were really poor,” said Wang Kang, a member of the China Association for Promoting Democracy.
Xi also highlighted the role of intellectuals, calling on them to make greater contribution to the nation's development, and to exert greater effect in supervising the government's work.
"General Secretary Xi asked us to contribute more to the rejuvenation of the nation. We really want to contribute more to the country, and I believe there is a lot of space for us,” Said Zhou Feng, a member of the Jiu San Society.
Non-communist political parties in China are not opposition parties - they can and do participate in the discussion and administration of state affairs. And for these parties, the promise of doing a better job by keeping pace with the ruling party came on Saturday.
