The Israeli cabinet green-lighted on Sunday multiple projects in Jerusalem, including building an elevator to the Western Wall to give those with physical disabilities access to one of Judaism’s holiest sites sitting on a contentious and controversial territory.

"We will establish a special new cable car tourism project starting from The First Station Complex to Dung Gate," Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said.

"We will approve building an elevator to the Western Wall making it handicapped accessible," he added.

The approval of a new "five-year development plan" for Jerusalem, including allocating additional funding to developing the area around the Old City and improving health services in East Jerusalem, was also on the agenda during Sunday's meeting, according to Times of Israel.

Israeli Housing Minister Yoav Galant said, “Now, the State of Israel not only declares that the Western Wall belongs to it, but also invests resources in it." – a statement that many would disagree with.

The status of Jerusalem is one of the core issues in Israel-Palestinian conflict. Israel annexed the Old City and East Jerusalem and declared the city as undivided capital after 1967, a move which has not been recognized by the international community. Meanwhile, the Palestinians claim the city's eastern half as the capital of their future state.
