Now to Kenya, where a road accident on the last day of 2017 killed dozens and injured scores. The collision between a truck and a bus took place on a stretch of road known for frequent accidents. Leslie Mirungu has the details.
An unfortunate end to the year for the victims of this crash. The accident between a passenger bus and a truck killed 36 people along the main highway connecting Kenya and Uganda, west of Nairobi. Among the casualties were three children. Authorities believe the bus driver may have lost control or the brakes failed, leading to the collision with the truck that was ferrying goods to Eldoret.
WANYAMA MUSIAMBO RIFT VALLEY REGIONAL COMMISSIONER "That head-on collision, it would appear that it is the bus that came and knocked the lorry because you can see the lorry is still standing and it is standing in its position and it is standing at the right place where it was supposed to be as it was moving up, so it must have been the bus that came over, either the brakes failed, we don't know as those are theories we are finding around as we were not there. It's either the brakes failed or the driver for one reason or the other was unable to control the vehicle -- you'd never know what happened that night."
Kenya's National Transport and Safety Authority has responded by banning night travel for all long distance public service vehicles.
The institution has been heavily criticised for failing to reduce road accidents, which account for around 3,000 Kenyan deaths every year. And more than a hundred people have perished in accidents this festive period.
While authorities have blamed careless road users, unroadworthy vehicles and speeding for the accidents, other observers say poor road construction and maintenance are to blame.
President Uhuru Kenyatta has since sent a message of condolence to the families further urging adherence to road safety measures. Leslie Mirungu CGTN.
