An Open China: Foreign ministry presents Hainan Province to the world
[]
This year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening up, and the 30th anniversary of south China Hainan province becoming the country's largest economic zone. For decades, Hainan has been trying to put itself on the map. In Beijing, the foreign ministry and Hainan authorities have jointly held an event promoting the opportunities in the region. Foreign Minister Wang Yi addressed the event. Back in the early 1990s, Hainan witnessed the largest property bust in modern Chinese history. But with the central government's intervention, the region has since emerged on the road toward healthy development. Since 2002, it has been the permanent venue for the annual Boao Forum for Asia, which inherited its name from the southern Hainan town of Boao. And today, the province continues to market itself as a tourist destination. Major international hotel chains have established resorts, especially in Sanya, which has been dubbed as "China's Hawaii".
