Leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) made a statement on Friday, announcing their intention to work together to combat international terrorism.

The statement came at the end of the 17th SCO summit which took place in the Kazakh capital, Astana.

"We strongly condemn all forms of terrorism. We call upon all nations to fully carry out relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly and the Security Council and the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy," said the statement.

The statement also stressed the leading role of the UN in the fight against extremism.

The statement emphasized the importance of adopting a comprehensive approach to fight the spread of terrorist and extremist ideology, for example preventing and stopping terrorists from using the Internet to instigate terrorist activities and recruit members.

The statement pointed out that terrorism should not be mixed with any region. SCO leaders condemned all intolerance, discrimination and violence against any religious group.

The group also said that countries should also aim to cut off terrorism's financial sources as required by the UN and Financial Action Task Force.
