Over 2,700 nature reserves established in China since 1956

China has made painstaking efforts to preserve its natural habitats and wildlife. The country's first nature reserve was established around six decades ago. Today, more than 2,700 reserves cover around 15 percent of the country.
China has 2,740 nature reserves with 1.42 million square kilometers of protected land. That amounts to nearly 15 percent of China's total land mass. The first reserve was established in 1956 in southern China's Guangdong Province.
Nature reserves are crucial for preserving endangered wildlife and great progress has been made over the years. According to a national wildlife survey issued by the State Forestry Administration last year, seven out of 14 extremely endangered species have experienced population growth.
