The China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is one of the major projects under the Belt and Road Initiative. Authorities of Gilgit-Baltistan, the northernmost administrative territory in Pakistan, say they will maintain peace to enable the successful completion of the corridor.
The Khunjerab pass, some 16,000 feet above sea level, is the border between China and Pakistan, and also the gateway of the CPEC.
The border is about 900 kilometers from the federal capital Islamabad and 300 kilometers from Gilgit City. Before the army offensive against militants, Gilgit was hit by sectarian incidents that claimed hundreds of lives, but peace has now been restored in the region.
Experts say the CPEC would create economic opportunities for the youth of Gilgit-Baltistan, which will keep them away from crime. With security enhanced, the tourism sector has also improved.
CGTN's Danial Khan reports that para-military posts all along the Karakoram highway to ensure safety and keep an eye on the entry of suspicious people. As the gateway of the CPEC , law enforcement and intelligence agencies along with the local government now collectively work for maintaining peace in Gilgit-Baltistan.
