The spokesperson of China's Foreign Ministry Hua Chunying on Wednesday voiced China's firm opposition to a visit by the Dalai Lama to a disputed border region in India.
Hua said that Beijing has made it clear that it firmly opposes this arrangement. However, Hua added, India has apparently ignored China's concerns, and is going forward with the visit, in spite of warnings that the move could severely hurt China-India relations.
Hua said that China's position on the issue of the eastern part of the country's border with India is both clear-cut and consistent. While India is clear about the role played by the 14th Dalai Lama, Hua explained that arranging for him to visit sensitive and disputed areas along the China-India border not only violates India's commitment to Tibet-related issues, but also further escalates the border disputes.
India’s invitation to the Dalai Lama is, according to Hua, opposite to the trend of China-India friendliness, and will not bring any benefit to India.
Hua affirmed that China will take necessary measures to protect its own territory and legitimate rights, adding that Beijing requires India to immediately stop its wrongful actions, and stop damaging the foundation of negotiations on border issues and the foundation of bilateral relations.
The Dalai Lama arrived in the so-called state of "Arunachal Pradesh" on Tuesday, and is scheduled to stay in the region for at least a week, according to Indian media.
