The extreme cold in North America has proven too much, even for Canadians. In the capital Ottawa, New Year celebrations were put on ice. The major city of Toronto also saw its party cut short due to the deep freeze.
Temperatures in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan fell to all-time lows on New Year's Eve. The provinces of Ontario and Quebec experienced record-breaking cold on New Year's Day. Ottawa's special events unit, which is responsible for events like the city's Cavalcade of Lights, has been in consultations with Toronto's Public Health, Toronto Police, and paramedics about celebrations.
