In the US state of California, at least 13 people have been killed and dozens of homes swept away in mudslides.
Heavy downpours sent mud and boulders sliding down hillsides stripped of vegetation by last month's wildfires. Helicopters were used to rescue more than 50 people who were stranded on rooftops because downed trees and power lines blocked roads. The Santa Barbara County Sheriff said the death toll could rise, with rescue workers still picking through dozens of damaged and demolished homes in search of survivors.
