“xXx: Return of Xander Cage” has enjoyed a blistering opening weekend at China’s box office, raking in 61.9 million US dollars according to Paramount. In just three days, the movie’s takings in China overtook its total box office receipts in the US, where it has taken 43.1 million US dollars since debuting on January 20.
The combination of action star Vin Diesel and Chinese actors Donnie Yen and Kris Wu always looked like a recipe for box office success in China. Prior to its release, Paramount’s president of international marketing Nic Crawley told The Wrap that the movie “has China written all over it.” Diesel is already a household name in the country after starring in the Fast and Furious franchise. Furious 7, released in 2015, remains the highest-grossing Hollywood production of all time in China, making 390.3 million US dollars.

The xXx opening weekend was the biggest three-day box office haul anywhere in the world this weekend, and broke the record for a February opener in China. It is also not the first time that a Hollywood movie has outperformed its US box office performance in China – 2016’s Warcraft was widely considered a flop in the States, but in China it amassed an astonishing 220.8 million US dollars.
It remains to be seen whether xXx can replicate Vin Diesel’s success in China with Furious 7, but the signs are promising. That movie saw a similarly high opening weekend of 63.5 million US dollars, followed by an astounding second weekend of 182.4 million US dollars.
But it is set to face tough competition this week from La La Land, which will open on Valentine’s Day. The musical, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone, has been a huge critical and commercial success in the US and Europe, picking up 14 Oscar nominations and 270 million US dollars from the box office as of last weekend, according to BoxOfficeMojo. On Sunday evening, the movie won five BAFTA awards, including Best Film and Best Actress for Emma Stone.

While the successful opening for xXx has been impressive, it has also been a good start of the year for domestic movies. “Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back” remains the biggest movie of the year so far, taking in 232.3 million US dollars, while Jackie Chan’s “Kung Fu Yoga” is not far behind, with a haul of 227.8 million US dollars, according to Beijing-based Ents Group.
