The country has seen its box office earnings increase at a healthy rate during the past decade and a half. This pace of growth is unprecedented across the world.
China's box office was only about 1 billion yuan in 2003 when reforms in the industry were introduced. Seven years later, revenue rose to 10 billion yuan. In 2012, nationwide box office receipts topped 17 billion yuan, which meant China had overtaken Japan as the world's second-largest movie market after the US.
In 2016, many thought the industry had hit a ceiling as sales rose less than four percent. So far this year, there's been a revival as revenue rose to more than 50 billion yuan, the first year the country broke through the 50-billion yuan mark in less than a year.
