China-UK Ties: Chinese firm helps build nuclear power stations in the UK

Clean energy has also been a main focus for cooperation between China and the UK. In fact, China's nuclear power technology is currently being processed for use in the oldest industrial country in the world. Xu Xinchen has more.
GREG CLARK UK SECRETARY OF BUSINESS, ENERGY & INDUSTRIAL STRATEGY "Hinkley Point C builds a huge long-term legacy in nuclear, an open way of investment in nuclear engineering. And we welcome the significant investment that CGN are putting into Hinkley project."
Capable of providing almost 10% of the UK's electricity for sixty years. Hinkley Point C is a nuclear power station project in the world's oldest industrial country co-developed by Electricity of France, and China General Nuclear.
SHI WEIQI, GENERAL MANAGER INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR POWER BUSINESS DEPARTMENT, CGN "The smooth progress on the construction of the Hinkley Point C means that CGN and EDF have been working well with each other on the UK nuclear energy project. It also sets up the foundations for CGN to work on more nuclear energy projects in the UK."
The project is expected to inject 40 million British pounds a year, equivalent to 355-million Chinese yuan, into the local economy, creating tens of thousands of jobs. Two thirds of the construction costs for the Hinkley Point C will be paid by EDF, and the rest by CGN while the station will be run by French technology.
XU XINCHEN BEIJING In addition to the Hinkley Point C, there are plans underway for another UK nuclear power station -- the Bradwell B, also co-developed by China General Nuclear and Electricity of France. And this time, the Chinese company is taking the majority share. And the China-made Hua-long Pressurized Reactor 1000 or the Hua-long One is going through the approval process for use in the Bradwell project."
China General Nuclear said these UK projects mean a great deal to Beijing as China continues its manufacturing upgrades.
SHI WEIQI, GENERAL MANAGER INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR POWER BUSINESS DEPARTMENT, CGN "These UK nuclear energy projects are the largest investment we've made in Europe. They're not just investments, but also ways for us to export Chinese technology, Chinese machinery and Chinese know-how. Exporting one Hua-long One is equal to exporting 20 single-aisle aircraft."
China can now manufacture 10 to 12 sets of equipment for nuclear power stations each year. And the country is the only one in the world where the manufacturing of nuclear power technology remained uninterrupted over the past three decades. Xu Xinchen, CGTN, Beijing.
