Deportation Controversy: 38,000 African migrants and asylum seekers in Israel
[]
Who are these African migrants? According to the Interior Ministry, there are some 38,000 African migrants and asylum seekers in Israel. Nearly three-quarters are Eritrean, and 20 percent Sudanese. The vast majority arrived in Israel between 2006 and 2012, when their home countries were afflicted by civil war and famine.  Only 11 African refugee status requests out of some 15-thousand have been approved.  The Africans began heading to Israel in 2005. That was after neighboring Egypt violently quashed a demonstration by Sudanese refugees, and at least 27 were killed. Word began to spread of safety and job opportunities in Israel.
