Pro-government rallies are due to take place in Tehran on Friday, with authorities seeking to put the past week's unrest to bed.
This comes after the US imposed new sanctions on Iran, and called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting. Iranian officials have announced 40 rallies across the province of Tehran, building on huge pro-government marches seen in many other cities over the previous two days. According to the country's interior minister, 42-thousand people took part in last week's protests, which left at least 21 people killed.
