Moving to the United States now. US President Donald Trump has slapped steep tariffs on imported washing machines and solar panels. The U.S. says a 20-percent tariff will be imposed on the first 1.2 million large residential washers in the first year. The tariff will rise to as much as 50 percent above that number before declining in the third year. Meanwhile, a 30-percent tariff will be imposed on imported solar cells and modules in the first year. The rate will decline to 15 percent by the fourth year. 2.5 gigawatts of unassembled solar cells will be treated tariff-free in each year. The tariffs came after the US International Trade Commission found that imports of both products hurt domestic manufacturers. The tariff punishes Samsung and LG while protecting their U.S. rival Whirlpool. Samsung has recently moved some production to the US while LG is building a factory there.
