China's express delivery industry continues to take off. The State Post Bureau said China's total volume hit more than 31 billion pieces last year, coming in first in the world.

The Bureau released the figure in a development report for 2016. That works out to each Chinese citizen on average sending 23 items by express last year.

The China Express Development Index hit 538.5 in 2016, up over 40 percent year on year.
Authorities say China Express Development Index is a comprehensive quantity evaluation of the development of China’s express delivery service in a certain period of time, based on the basic features and laws of China’s express delivery service.

The index shows that the express delivery service keeps a momentum of sustaining high-speed development.
The total express delivery volume is expected to hit over 42 billion this year, up 35 percent year on year.‍

The development of the high-speed express delivery industry, on the one hand, has been driven by traditional online shopping, along with increasing industrial innovations like crowdsourcing of postal services and shared third-party logistics services.
The Post Bureau says the rapid growth of these services embodies a new round of fast economic development.
