At least 2 people were killed and 70 others injured after an Amtrak passenger train collided with a CSX freight train in the eastern US state of South Carolina. Authorities in Lexington county, where the crash happened, said all remaining passengers had been evacuated from the train.
HARRISON CAHILL PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER FOR LEXINGTON COUNTY "The 70 injuries range obviously in variety, we have anything from small scratches and bumps to more severe broken bones. We were able to secure two leaks of fuel from the train. Right now we are estimating 5,000 gallons of fuel have spilled. We have called CSX teams to secure those leaks and we are assisting as much as we can."
In a statement following Sunday's crash, Amtrak said its lead engine derailed along with some passenger cars. The accident comes days after another Amtrak train carrying several US lawmakers collided with a garbage truck in Virginia, killing one person. In December, three people were killed when an Amtrak passenger train derailed in Washington state.
