The fourth phase of Shanghai's Yangshan deep water port, the largest automated container terminal in the world, is starting trial operation today. Part of the Port of Shanghai is in Hangzhou Bay, the system can operate completely unmanned. ZHANG DAN has the story.
For the first time in China, the process of customs inspection and clearance can now be done automatically. With these advanced systems, the customs officers in Yangshan know the information of every container in the port.
TAN WU, DEPUTY CHIEF SHANGHAI CUSTOMS "We mainly use a supervisory method called 'homeopathic supervision'. Instead of interrupting logistics and transportation processes, we embed this technology to conduct supervision efficiently. In this way, we can implement effective customs oversight during the processes as well."
If customs officers want to inspect a random container, they can use a large, mobile vehicle-mounted container inspection equipment, which can inspect goods within its range and transmit data to the supervision offices located 50 kilometers away.
ZHOU LI, DEPUTY CHIEF YANGSHAN BRANCH, SHANGHAI CUSTOMS "The technology has a fast inspection mode. In a large-scale unmanned port, where the number of containers is large, it can conduct inspections for a lot of containers -- 150 in one hour."
Shanghai's Yangshan deep water port ranks as the largest cargo port in the world. It accommodates ships with depths of up to 15 metres, and is capable of handling the largest container ships today. ZHANG DAN, CGTN.
