Zhao Xihai, a lumberjack from the Hongshi Forestry Bureau in northeast China’s Jilin Province, dedicated half his life to the afforestation of mountainous areas. /China Daily Photo

For three decades, he lived away from the bustling city, planting 180,000 trees and breeding one million saplings. /China Daily Photo

In 2006, Zhao was recognized as one of the "Top 10 Outstanding Citizens in Jilin” and awarded the country’s Afforestation Medal one year later. /China Daily Photo

He died on Friday at the age of 78, one day before China’s Tree Planting Day on March 12. But his trees will surely live on. /China Daily Photo
