Chongyang Festival: Traditional, auspicious day to celebrate longevity
[]
Now more on the traditional Chongyang Festival, or Double Ninth Festival, as it falls on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month. It has for generations been a day in celebration of longevity. Going all the way back to the Tang dynasty, more than 13-hundred years ago, the Chinese would plant cornel twigs on this day, and adorn themselves with the plant as they believed it would keep away diseases and disasters. And the seasonal chrysanthemum is also integral too, as they are called "the flower of longevity" in China. Chrysanthemums go into rice wine and other snacks that are associated with this day. And since the Chinese are so family-oriented, there's nothing they like to do more together for the Chongyang Festival than climb a mountain!
