World Cancer Day: Nearly 1 in 6 deaths due to the deadly disease

Sunday marks World Cancer Day. Cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Globally, nearly 1 in 6 deaths is due to cancer. As the number of those affected rises, close attention is being paid to treatment.
Every year, more than 14 million people are diagnosed with cancer. In China, the number is over 4 million. The most common causes of cancer deaths are cancers of lung, liver, colorectal, stomach and breast. The economic impact is also significant. About 70 percent of deaths from cancer occur in low and middle income countries. Around one-third of the deaths are due to 5 behavioral and dietary risks. These include high body mass index, low fruit and vegetable intake, and a lack of physical activity, as well as tobacco and alcohol use.
