China's Meteorological Administration has announced a yellow alert for blizzards in northwest and central China. And as some cities are bracing for the snow, some others are embracing the icy weather. Wang Yuan has the details.
The arrival of the New Year also brings snow and rain to the land of China. As an old Chinese saying goes a timely snow promises a good harvest. Essentially, good for crops. However, many cities in northwest and central China are taking measures after a warning for blizzards was issued. The cold snap began to sweep northwestern provinces such as Shaanxi on Tuesday, and its provincial capital Xi'an is expected to see five centimeters of snow in the coming days.
With 1,000 staff and more than 120 snow removing machines on standby, the city is prepared to maintain smooth traffic even during the extreme weather.
ZHANG TAO DEPUTY DIRECTOR, CONSERVATION DEPARTMENT XI'AN CITY CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT COMPANY "We have informed all of our working groups to upload the snow-melting agent onto our trucks. A total number of 35 tons of snow-melting agent is prepared, and we will clear the snow of 11 flyovers and 17 pedestrian overpasses in our district."
In other regions, heavy snowfall is not a burden, and it has brought some icy delights for outdoor enthusiasts. Dashing through the snow, racers in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region have organized a winter rally in a silver white natural playground. And the Northeastern Province of Heilongjiang certainly knows how to captivate its visitors with snow-covered mountains and forests. The Phoenix Mountain situated in southwest Heilongjiang is transformed into a winter wonderland.
GUO PINGLAN TOURIST "The scenery here is spectacular and it's beyond words. This is my best hiking experience recently and the view of the Phoenix Mountain is the most beautiful one."
Whether traveling afar or enjoying winter sports, one thing is for sure: a heavy coat and scarf are needed to get ready for the snow. WY CGTN.
