Nine years ago, an 8.0-magnitude earthquake rocked Wenchuan, southwest China’s Sichuan Province. Ruins in the area now serve as a memorial for the nearly 70,000 people killed. This photo shows Xunkou High School, destroyed in the earthquake and now a place for people to pay condolences. /CFP Photo

Beichuan Middle School was completely covered by falling stones in the earthquake, with over 1,000 deaths. Only a national flagpole and a basketball hoop stand still. /CFP Photo

Baihua Bridge was twisted and distorted in the earthquake. It is now covered by mud and rocks. /CFP Photo

Xuanping Village was submerged as a barrier lake formed after a dam was destroyed in the disaster. Years later, as the water level decreases, visitors can glimpse the village again. /CFP Photo

The old teaching building of Xuankou Middle School is now overgrown with bushes and plants. /CFP Photo
