Two mangoes in Japan’s southwestern Miyazaki Prefecture were sold for 3,600 US dollars at a local market on Thursday.
The eye-watering deal was struck at the fruit's first auction of 2017, doubling a record set in 2016. The mangoes were sold under the brand "Taiyo no Tamago," which means "Egg of the Sun." To qualify as a mango of this variety, each fruit must weigh at least 350 grams, with a high sugar content as well as a unique red blush.
The wholesaler who placed the record bid said he wanted to uphold the value of the "Egg of the Sun" brand and promote the area of Miyazaki, where the auction took place.
