Haikou, the capital of southern China’s Hainan Province, lures scores of visitors every year with its mix of stunning architecture, natural beauty and local delicacies. The port city lies at the north of Hainan Island, and about 120 kilometers to the south is the town of Bo'ao, which will host its annual Forum for Asia on March 23-26. /CFP Photo

Coastal cities often have beaches and modern resorts, but Haikou has a unique island culture driven by its history as a port, military outpost and trading hub. /CFP Photo

In Qilou Old Street, the city’s old district, the buildings are a mix of Portuguese, French, and Southeast Asian styles. There are many small outdoor restaurants, and food stalls fill the streets until late at night. It is the best place to find local food and traditional artifacts in the city. /CFP Photo

The city also has the best living environment and air quality in China. The Dongzhai Port Nature Reserve has an area of 2,500 hectares and includes six rivers. The coastline is very irregular and includes a number of bays and tidewater gullies. The famous mangrove forest on the southern coast provides a habitat for rare wildlife and plants. /CFP Photo
