China has introduced its toughest regulation on land reclamation along its coastline. The State Oceanic Administration says it will demolish all illegally reclaimed land and stop approving general reclamation projects.
The law on administration of maritime space use went into effect in 2002. By the end of 2017, China had legally approved over 150-thousand hectares of land reclamation. That accounts for about 12 percent of the newly added construction land area in coastal areas over the same 15-year period.
