German Chancellor Angela Merkel warned the UK not to have any "illusions" of having the same rights as EU member states after it leaves the bloc, as she addressed the German lower house of parliament on Thursday.
Speaking ahead of an EU summit in Brussels, she said the conditions of Britain's exit must be resolved in a "satisfactory" way before negotiations turn to its future relations with the EU.
Merkel also expressed concern about recent actions taken by the Turkish government, noting in particular the arrest and treatment of a German newspaper correspondent, which she said was "incompatible with a constitutional state".
