The first summit between the leaders of China and the US last week has led to some important accomplishments. Shortly after the meeting, Chinese President Xi ‍Jinping and US President Donald Trump talked on the phone again on Wednesday to discuss the situation on the Korean Peninsula. The phone call comes amid a bad case of jitters as the USS Carl Vinson strike group approaches the region. It was made to follow up on the first face-to-face interaction between the two presidents earlier in Florida. 

“There is not any major change in China’s policy toward the DPRK nuclear issue, but China is increasingly concerned about the situation.” Cui Tiankai, China’s Ambassador to the US told CGTN's Tian Wei in an exclusive interview.

He went on to say that China’s top priority is its own national security, which falls in line with the overall security of the region. The Chinese Ambassador also suggested that China "is against any action by any party that is not so peaceful.” He made the remark when asked to comment on the US strike group on its way to the waters of the Korean Peninsula.

Cui also commented on Trump’s recent remarks on Twitter that China is not a currency manipulator. “This is clear to the world” said Cui.

On the wider economic and trade issues, Cui revealed that the Chinese side was the first to suggest the 100-day proposal between China and the US on trade and economic issues.

China believes it was meant to be a good indication of commitment to developing a healthy and stronger economic relationship toward the two countries. It would serve both to work out some early harvest, including the Bilateral Investment Treaty.
