Russian President Vladimir Putin has told leaders at the G20 summit that Russia has never interfered in the 2016 US presidential election, Russian G20 sherpa Svetlana Lukash said on Twitter on Saturday.
"Pres Putin points to #G20 partners on absence of real evidence of that & confirms that Russia had never interfered in US elections," she wrote.
Putin has relayed the same idea to his US counterpart Donald Trump when the two met on Friday for the first time after Trump took office in January.
Suspicions about Moscow meddling in the presidential election to influence it in favor of Trump have been rife, dominating the political climate in the US for months.
Congressional and FBI investigations are currently underway in the US to probe whether Trump’s campaign team colluded with Moscow to influence the 2016 election. Trump has also been embroiled into the controversy after being accused of obstructing justice by firing former FBI James Comey, who was overseeing a probe into the allegations of Trump's associates' complicity with Moscow.
