Italian Serie A: Juventus 1 - Genoa 0
[]
Over in Italy, Juventus hosted Genoa in their first Serie A match back following the winter break. After seeing off Atalanta a day earlier, Napoli had opened up a four-point gap at the top and a win would see Juve close the lead to one point ahead of their meeting in April. The homeside are presented with their first opportunity on six minutes when Nicolas Spolli trips Gonzalo Higuain.
Miralem Pjanic's effort goes close but young Italy international Mattia Perin palms the shot away Decent save from the 25-year-old who hasn't conceded in previous four outings in the league.
But ten minutes later he's picking the ball out of his net for the first time in 376 minutes of Serie A action. Douglas Costa beats the offside trap for a close range finish to put Juve 1-up.
Smart pass from Mario Mandzukic to link up with the ex-Bayern Munich man. Higuain nearly thinks he has doubled the advantage with five minutes until the break but sees the referee blow his whistle for a foul on Spolli in the build up.
The visitors mount a final assault in the closing stages but Andrey Galabinvo's header goes wide. 1-nil is how it finishes. This is how the table looks. The top two have each won their last five games and are separated by a single point. Lazio and Inter Milan are ten off the pace as the nearest challengers.
