The international community has responded to recent clashes between Israeli security forces and Palestinian protesters on Saturday, after Israel introduced new security measures at the al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem.

The UN Security Council will hold an urgent meeting on Monday to discuss the violence.

The European Union urged Israel and Jordan to work together to "ensure security for all" in Jerusalem's Old City.

The US said in a statement it is "very concerned" about the tensions, and it will “continue to closely monitor the developments.”

The Arab League condemned what it said was Israel's "excessive violence" against Palestinians.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also denounced Israeli security forces' use of force as “excessive”, and has condemned Israel for installing metal detectors at the al-Aqsa mosque.
