The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank approved a loan to Bangladesh in June last year for the country’s distribution system upgrade and expansion project. Since the Bangladeshi government’s call for financial support was approved, there has been smooth progress in the project’s implementation. AIIB senior investment operation specialist Yang Hongliang says, the project could bring direct benefits to more than 12.5 million people living in rural areas and create a big social impact on Bangladesh’s economic development. Bangladesh has the ambitious target of achieving affordable access to electricity for its entire population of 160 million people by 2021, and this goal requires vast investment towards its infrastructure. The international support and backing for the project is just one example of what the Belt and Road Initiative can achieve.
