Nine Pakistanis were killed and at least 42 wounded, after Afghan security forces fired across the border town of Chaman in Pakistan's southwest Baluchistan Province.
The Pakistani government and military officials said the artillery attack was unprovoked.
However, Afghan provincial officials claimed Pakistan fired first, wounding two Afghan policemen.
Friday's cross-border incident was the latest escalation to already tense relations between the two neighbors.
‍The incident occurred days after two high-level Pakistani delegations of officials visited Afghanistan for discussions on security issues, focusing on border management.
