The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has called for greater attention to local security and humanitarian dynamics in countries along the Belt and Road.
"The ICRC has significant and often long-term operations in 40 countries along the Belt and Road. As a result, the ICRC has a deep understanding of local security and humanitarian dynamics, as well as first-hand knowledge of development challenges,” Peter Maurer, president of the ICRC, told CGTN.
Maurer believes the ICRC can make a valuable contribution to the discussions at the Forum and to the Initiative, by fostering a solid partnership with Chinese authorities and the Red Cross Society of China for longer-term cooperation within this framework.

Maurer says, during discussions at the Forum, he will emphasize that providing neutral, impartial and independent humanitarian assistance in sometimes protracted conflicts and situations of violence, can create a conducive environment for development.
He also says the Forum will include the ICRC’s cooperation agreement with China on humanitarian assistance to Syria, as he expects more partners and supports to the Red Cross’s work around the world.
