‘Road to Prosperity’ episode 9: Mombasa-Nairobi SGR boosts employment in Kenya The Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) is the biggest infrastructure project since Kenya was founded in 1963, as written in the project's Corporate Social Responsibility Report. This project has employed tens of thousands of Kenyans since its official launch on December 12, 2014, with at least 15,000 still on duty. It has not only changed Kenya’s history of transportation, but the lives of its workers. An agreement with relevant Kenyan labor unions ensures that local employees are insured, receive benefits and are paid above minimum wage. Contracts are renewed annually, and include increases in benefits and salary.
