Two armored trucks transporting money have been robbed in South Africa's two largest cities - Johannesburg and Cape Town. The robberies come a day after another armored vehicle was robbed in the city of Durban.
A 44-year-old security guard was shot dead on Saturday during the heist in Cape Town. Five men attacked the guard and his colleague‚ who were delivering money to ATMs‚ shortly before 10am in the city's Athlone district. The attack‚ which left the second guard seriously injured‚ was captured by security camera. Local police say the suspects fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money.
In Johannesburg, multiple suspects attacked a cash carrier parked on the side of the road due to a flat tire. Heavily-armed men looted the vehicle, taking all of the money but leaving security personnel unharmed.
South Africa has one of the highest global homicide rates, with 52 people being murdered in the country every day. Official statistics showed that between April and December 2016, a total of 40,972 common robberies were reported to the police, down slightly from 41,247 for the same period the previous year. The common robbery rate also decreased slightly, from 75 to 73.3 robberies per 100,000 people.
