French President Emmanuel Macron is wrapping up his three-day China visit, which is designed to boost ties between China and the euro zone's second largest economy. Let's have a quick review of his visit. Yang Zhao has the details.
In the past three days, French President Emmanuel Macron has pulled out all the stops to express his willingness to work with the world's second largest economy.
He launched his state visit to China in Xi'an, the starting point of the ancient Silk Road in northwest China, in a nod to China's initiative which is designed to revive the famous trading route.
He also tried out his own version of China's famed "panda diplomacy" by gifting Chinese President Xi Jinping a French horse. China has for decades gifted friendly nations with its unofficial national mascot in what is known as "panda diplomacy". Macron said the horse was a symbol of the ties he wanted to develop with China.
But improved trade and business relations is at the top of the agenda. He led a delegation of more than 50 top business representatives to China. Multi-million dollar deals have been signed ranging from energy, to automobiles, to aviation and pharmaceuticals. China is France's largest trading partner in Asia. And, France is China's third largest investment target country in Europe.
EMMANUEL MACRON FRENCH PRESIDENT "I think China is an indispensable partner for the future. China needs technology. Europe and France can meet this need. France itself also has the need of economic development, cooperation and creating jobs. We can solve the problems of each other. I hope that there will be more Chinese investment in Europe, with the presumption that they will comply with the framework we have agreed on and in the industries that we both consider appropriate, to guarantee that those investments will benefit both countries."
Speaking in the city of Xi'an, Macron endorsed China's Belt and Road initiative, saying China and Europe should collaborate so that a new Silk Road is not a one-way street.
EMMANUEL MACRON FRENCH PRESIDENT "I have seen that this initiative has been enriched with almost new changes every week. If this initiative is beneficial to being stable, balanced and fair, then we should work together. I am positive towards this initiative. My focus is that the sovereignty, union and democracy of the EU remain intact."
