Israel has indicted Palestinian teenager Ahed Tamimi for slapping and kicking an Israeli soldier inside her family's home compound. Tamimi is no ordinary team. And her case may result in an unusually-harsh sentence. CGTN's Stephanie Freid has this update.
It's this video that led to Ahed Tamimi's middle of the night arrest and Monday's indictment. Tamimi has been going head-to-head with the Israeli army since elementary school. Influenced by seeing friends and relatives injured and killed by IDF fire, her anti-Israeli occupation activism is bold, unapologetic and far-reaching, which is why Israel's government may sentence her to a lengthy prison term.
GABI LASKY, ATTORNEY FOR AHED TAMIMI TEL AVIV "She has become a symbol of the new generation of Palestinians that show that occupation has to be defied with your bare hands.”
Ahed's eleven-year-old cousin Jana is also of that generation. Filing anti-occupation reports since she was six.
STEPHANIE FREID FEBRUARY 2015, NEBI SALEH "Jana is somewhere here behind me, beyond that smoke."
She's a huge fan of Ahed's and claims she's not afraid of following in her older cousin's footsteps.
JANA TAMIMI NEBI SALEH, WEST BANK "I don't want to be arrested. But more people will know more about Palestine and about our issue so they can support us."
Within the Palestnian sector, Ahed is being hailed as the new face of the resistance. Is spreading the word reward enough for a potential lifetime behind bars?
JANA TAMIMI NEBI SALEH, WEST BANK "It's not gonna be the rest of my life because after a few years, Palestine will be free."(Stephanie: You're sure of that?) "I'm sure."
A date for Ahed Tamimi's sentencing is pending. Stephanie Freid, CGTN, Nebi Saleh in the Israeli occupied West Bank.
