Egyptian woman, Eman Ahmed Abdelaty, who is said to be the world’s heaviest at 500 kilograms, has lost 100 kilograms before undergoing a successful surgery in India.
The Saifee Hospital in Mumbai released a statement that the medical team had successfully performed the surgery with no hiccups, according to a report by AFP.
“Eman Successfully underwent a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy on March 7th… she had an uneventful surgery and anesthesia course,” said the statement.
According to Dr. Muffazal Lakdawala who is leading Eman’s treatment, the 37-year-old has been brought under 400 kilograms since she arrived in Mumbai in early February.
“Eman has lost over 100 kilograms and has been shedding weight gradually on a daily basis with all the treatment and support,” she told AFP.
Eman Ahmed was put on a special liquid diet when she arrived in India to get her weight down to a level low enough for doctors to be able to operate on her. Bariatric surgery is a stomach-shrinking bypass procedure carried out on those wanting to lose excessive weight.
“The future course of action for the medical team working on her will be to correct all her associated medical problems, to get her fit enough to fly back to Egypt as soon as possible,” the statement further said.
Owing to her weight, Eman has suffered a stroke and faced a series of other serious ailments, including diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension and sleep deprivation.
The Egyptian from the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria had not left her house in over two decades, until she was flown to Mumbai in a specially modified Airbus on February 11 for treatment.
Doctors say that she is now able to sit up and is expected to spend several months being monitored and receiving physiotherapy to exercise her muscles before returning to Egypt.
