US President Donald Trump has officially met his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the G20 summit. Trump said he discussed "various things" with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, and that things are going well.

Trump made the remarks after meeting Putin on Friday on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Hamburg.

Putin said he was delighted to meet Trump personally and hopes their meeting will "bring results."

Trump had said previously that he wants to find ways to work with Putin, a goal made more difficult by sharp differences over Russia's actions in Syria and Ukraine and allegations Moscow meddled in the 2016 US presidential election.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called the meeting “constructive” with lingering disagreements addressed, including concerns over alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

CGTN’s Natalie Carney reported that the meeting between the two world leaders was initially intended to last 30 minutes, but it went on for more than two hours. The bilateral meeting took place at the same time as the group’s discussion on climate change, expected to be controversial due to Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement.
