Acclaimed filmmaker Lu Chuan is a producer, writer, and director with a filmography that spans multiple genres. From black comedies to westerns, from the horrors of war to monsters, Lu doesn't allow genres to limit his filmography.
Lu's passion for film was obvious since childhood. But his father, the prestigious Chinese novelist, Lu Tianming, said he needed life experience before becoming a filmmaker.
Before embarking on school, Lu served two years in the military as a general's secretary. After his service, he studied film directing at the prestigious Beijing Film Academy.

Since then, his films have received numerous accolades in China and around the world.
His feature film debut, "The Missing Gun," is a black comedy that follows a small town police officer searching for his missing gun. Starring acclaimed Chinese actor and filmmaker Jiang Wen, the film explores the themes of self-identity and self-respect, as well as addressing a number of social issues.
"The Missing Gun" was presented at the Cannes, Venice and Sundance Film Festivals, won Best Script at the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival, and Best Directorial Debut at the Beijing College Student Film Festival.
His second film, "Kekexili: Mountain Patrol," is a modern western that takes place in the Tibetan mount region and follows the story of volunteer rangers who protect the endangered Tibetan antelope from extinction at the hands of poachers. The film brought awareness to the plight of the Tibetan antelopes and the volunteers responsible for their protection.

His third film, the controversial war drama, "City of Life and Death," garnered critical and commercial success around the world. The film takes place during the Nanjing Massacre in 1937 and follows the stories of multiple characters, including a sympathetic portrayal of a Japanese soldier that stirred controversy. The film has won multiple awards around the world, including Best Film and Best Cinematography at the San Sebastian Film Festival and Best Film at the Oslo Film Festival.
His latest film is the Disney nature film titled "Born in China." Featuring stunning cinematography of China's wilderness, the film follows the adventures of three animal families: the panda, the golden monkey, and the snow leopard. "Born in China" will be released in the United States on Friday, a day before Earth Day.
