To South Africa now, where media reports indicate the ruling ANC's National Executive Committee has resolved to ask President Jacob Zuma to step down. His presidential term officially ends in 2019. It's not clear when the committee will make the request for his resignation. CGTN's Yolisa Njamela has more.
The ANC national executive committee is keeping their cards close to their chests. The party's top leadership refuses to comment on reports that the party plans to request President Jacob Zuma to resign, And that if he refuses he will be forced to step down by the party's top six officials. Zuma's presidency has been tainted by a series of corruption allegations, all of which he denies. In December 2017, Zuma stepped down as ANC president. Cyril Ramaphosa succeeded him, making him the likely candidate to replace Zuma as the country's next president.
GIDEON CHITANGA, REGIONAL ANALYST POLITICAL ECONOMY SOUTHERN AFRICA "I think it's a matter of time before president Zuma is recalled. Quite clearly power has shifted since the ANC conference and what is happening now is that the ANC president and not the state president is the real center of power. I think all the momentum is with Ramaphosa to dictate the policy direction and the political direction of the ANC."
RALPH MATHEKGA POLITICAL ANALYST "He has to be able to read the situation one way or another that it's time for him to resign, that it's very untenable for him to continue as the president of the country while he's not the president of the ANC. Perhaps he might try to push it to deliver the last state of the nation address and the problem is where he gets disrupted. Would he be willing to be heckled for the last time or will he just peacefully say thank you South Africa, that's just about it."
Ramaphosa has maintained that the Zuma issue must be handled with care. He also cautioned that Zuma should not be humiliated.
YOLISA NJAMELA PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA "While all indications that President Zuma will not finish his second term in office, the party will only inform the nation when it announces its meeting outcomes on Monday. Yolisa Njamela CGTN, Pretoria, South Africa."
