The village, about one hour's drive from Hangzhou in East China's Zhejiang Province, has recently experienced a complete overhaul. Over the past few years, a total of 46 buildings have been constructed for the farmer residents of the village as part of a rural renovation project initiated by the local government.

The nearly 50 houses, forming 12 clusters, all sport gleaming white walls topped by black tiled roofs. The sight has proved a popular view, especially for people approaching from afar.

Dongziguan is known to fans of Chinese literature, thanks to the late author Yu Dafu (1896-1945), who portrayed it as "peaceful, easy-going, comfortable, and self-sufficient."

However, since Yu committed these words to paper in the early 1900s, the village has endured considerable wear and tear.

After the recent rebuilding project, the village took on a new appearance, which reminded China's Internet users of the works of the late painter Wu Guanzhong (1919-2010), who combined Western and Oriental techniques in depicting traditional architecture in East China.
