The Chinese Defense Ministry says China's latest stealth fighter, the J-20, is now in operation for the People's Liberation Army Air Force. Its introduction marks dramatic progress in China's efforts to develop advanced aircraft, and strengthen its abilities to safeguard national security.
The J-20 is China's fourth-generation medium and long-range fighter jet. It made its maiden flight in 2011 and was first shown to the public at the 11th Airshow China in Zhuhai, Guangdong Province, in November last year. In July this year, the aircraft made its parade debut as the PLA staged a show of force to mark its 90th anniversary.
The J20 fighter combines advanced stealth capabilities with fighter aircraft speed and agility. With high relaxed static stability and twin-engine, it can perform missions of attacking high-value targets. In terms of armaments, the J20 contains lateral bays for a variety of missiles and surface attack weapons. It also carries advanced electronic systems.
Experts say the J-20's entry into service provides China with a variety of air combat options and enhances its combat capability.
